KFC – Ditches the Half Century old Punch Line

Who in Mauritius don’t know about the KFC – well the basic history of KFC in mauritius is almost couple of decades old. Launched in 1983, the first KFC outlet in Mauritius has carved a solid reputation as a quick service restaurant which provides quality products and service. In the company’s 14 stores spread out across the island, customers can relax and enjoy their finger-licking favorites in the same consumer-friendly environment. A convenient drive-thru service is also available at some units.

Pick N Eat is the company which operates the KFC franchise in Mauritius. The company has its own training centre and features regularly in the top performance league of the Indian sub-continent region. Now every part of the world is much conscious about their health KFC too is thinking about major changes in the way they are going to promote and the way they will be cooking.

For 50 years, Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) has attracted customers with its ‘finger lickin’ good’ punch line, but the company has decided to ditch the slogan for a healthier one now.The catchphrase originated by accident in the 1950s when franchisee David Harman was shown eating chicken and licking his fingers in the background of an American TV commercial.

A viewer phoned up to complain about the incident and spoke to manager Ken Harbough, who replied, “Well it’s finger lickin’ good.” The re-branding exercise will coincide with the introduction of healthier frying oils and meals cooked on a griddle instead of in a frier. There are also plans to show the calorie content of all items on KFC’s menus from September.
“”Finger lickin’ good” is… very food-centric. “So Good” is still about the food, but it also allows us to more effectively communicate the breadth of different things about the brand, such as our people,” the Daily Mail quoted KFC’s Martin Shuker as saying.

The chain has been working closely with The Food Network as a partner in the Department of Health’s ‘Responsibility Deal,’ which aims to give customers greater choice. Chains across the UK and Ireland will also stop using palm food oil and switch to healthier rapeseed oils to reduce saturated fats across its range by 25 per cent and cut food miles by sourcing it from Kent instead of Asia. The latest hot news in quatre-bornes lately it seems, is the re-opening of NANDO’s restaurant after nearly 10 years. Situated at the ground floor of the newly refurbished wing of the Trianon Shopping Centre, the new Nando’s restaurant can accommodate up to115 guests at one go it seems.

But my goodness! I didn’t realize that Mauritians are still so much in awe of Nando’s unique flame grilled Peri Peri chicken. My colleagues and I decided to have lunch there today to celebrate our last moments together for this year, till we move on to our busy holidays.
